AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of Google search results, synthesizing content from multiple web pages before the organic link list.
Google AI Overviews (formerly SGE — Search Generative Experience) rolled out broadly in 2024. They appear for a significant share of Google searches, particularly informational, how-to, and product comparison queries.
How They Work
- Google detects a query suitable for an AI Overview
- Retrieves pages from its own index
- Passes content to Gemini for synthesis
- Displays a boxed AI answer above organic results, with source links

Traditional SEO success (Page 1, Position 1) does not guarantee AI Overview visibility. The Overview may:
- Cite different sources than the top organic results
