Metrics
Citation Rate
Definition
The percentage of relevant AI search queries for which a brand is mentioned or cited in the AI-generated answer.
Citation rate is calculated by:
- Defining a representative set of queries your target customers use (e.g., "best [product type]", "[your category] for [use case]", "compare [competitor A] vs [competitor B]")
- Running those queries across target AI platforms (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews)
- Counting what share of queries produce an answer that mentions your brand
Citation rate = (queries where your brand is mentioned) ÷ (total queries tested) × 100
Benchmarks
There are no universal benchmarks yet — AI search is too new. However, patterns observed across audits suggest:
- Under 5% — Critical visibility gap; brand likely blocked or insufficiently indexed
- 5–15% — Low but improvable; technical fixes + content work typically yields results within 90 days
- 15–35% — Competitive; brand is present for core queries, gaps in long-tail
- Above 35% — Strong; focus shifts to citation quality and competitive share
Citation Rate vs Citation Share
Citation rate measures your absolute visibility. Citation share measures your visibility relative to competitors. Both are important: a 40% citation rate sounds strong, but if every competitor has 60–70%, your relative position is weak.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How often should I measure citation rate?
- Monthly is a reasonable cadence for most brands — AI search indexes update continuously. Run a baseline audit, implement changes, then re-audit 60–90 days later to measure impact.
- Does citation rate differ by platform?
- Yes, significantly. A brand may have a 35% citation rate on Perplexity and 8% on ChatGPT, depending on which platform's retrieval favors their content. Platform-level breakdowns are essential in a thorough audit.
- Is citation rate the only metric that matters?
- No. Citation rate measures whether you appear. Citation quality (positive vs. neutral vs. negative framing), query coverage (which queries trigger your citation), and share of voice complete the picture.
