Citation Share

Definition

The fraction of citations within a specific query or topic where your brand is the cited source, as opposed to a competitor.

While Share of Voice in AI measures your presence across a full category query set, citation share focuses on individual queries or query clusters. It answers: "When AI answers questions about [topic], how often are we the cited brand?"

Example

For the query cluster "best silk pillowcases":

  • Brand A is cited in 42 of 50 AI answers tested = 84% citation share
  • Brand B is cited in 18 of 50 = 36% citation share
  • Brand C is cited in 9 of 50 = 18% citation share

A brand with 36% citation share for this cluster has significant room to gain ground — and knows exactly where to focus content and link-building efforts.

Citation Share vs Citation Rate

  • Citation rate — across all your queries, what share mention you at all
  • Citation share — within a specific query, what share of answers pick you specifically

Citation share is more actionable for competitive strategy. It pinpoints the exact queries where you are losing to competitors and can be improved through targeted content, review acquisition on relevant platforms, and structured data.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is citation share measured?
By running a query multiple times (or across multiple test conditions) and counting what share of responses cite your brand. AI answers are not deterministic — the same query can return different citations on different runs, so volume matters for reliable measurement.
Can citation share change quickly?
Yes. AI search indexes update continuously. A new press mention, a fresh review, or a competitor's new content can shift citation share within days. That is why ongoing monitoring matters alongside periodic audits.
